Bumthang lies in the central region of the country and many visitors claim it to have similar vegetation and geographical topography like of Switzerland. Bumthang comprises of four valleys Ura, Chumey, Tang and Chokhor. The name Bumthang origins with the valley believed to have shape of Bumpa, the vessel of holy water which is mainly found on the Buddhists alter and other version of the origin is Bum (girl) Thang (place) also known as place of beautiful girls.

Jakar Dzong (fortress)
This fortress is located on a ridge overlooking Bumthang valley. Legend says when lamas were searching for a site to build monastery, a big white bird rose suddenly in the air and settled on a spur of a hill thus interpreted to be good omen to built monastery and fortress. The fortress was built to commemorate victory over troops of Tibetan ruler Phuntsho Namgyel.
Wangdicholing palace
Unlike the other fortresses it was the first palace in Bhutan that was not designed as fortress and it was built in year 1857. It used to serve as residence for first King and also home for 3rdKing.
Jambey Lhakhang
Jambey Lhakhang shares same history as Kyichu Lhakhang at Paro.
Kurje Lhakhang
As Legend says this beautiful temple is named (Kur) body (Jey) print after Guru Rinpoche left his body print on a cave after subduing local deity of the place. One can still see body print on a cave inside the temple.
Tamzhing Lhakhang (Temple of good message)
It was built in 1501 by Terton Pema Lingpa a Treasure discover who used to reveal scared text and religious instruments which were hidden by Guru Rimpoche for the future well being of sentiment beings and he was one of the important treasure discoverer prophesied by Guru Rimpoche. You will be seeing iron chain mail inside the temple which weights around 25 kilograms and we Bhutanese believe it to have the power to clean sins so we wear it and carry and circumambulate around the temple atleast three times which was believe to made by Terton Pema Lingpa himself.
